Turkish natural gas market entered the privatization process with the “Law on Natural Gas Market” Number 4646 that was put into effect on May 2, 2001 in line with the purpose of “offering high quality, continuous and inexpensive natural gas to consumers in a competitive environment without posing any danger to environment. Aygaz Doğal Gaz companies were established to participate in the private sector activities within the scope of the said Law and to benefit from opportunities to arise at home and overseas in respect of the natural gas.
Having adopted the common aim to be listed among the active and major players of the natural gas sector, Koç Group, and Statoil Hydro ASA, one of the biggest companies of the petroleum and natural gas sector internationally, signed a cooperation agreement on November 17, 2000. Within that framework, human resource investments, review of relevant legislation, lobbying activities, local and international sector analyses and promotional activities were carried out.
As we operate in the energy sector, our activities are governed by the regulations and practices of the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA). Pursuant to EMRA rules governing natural gas, we are liable to set up a separate company for each of our activities.
Accordingly, we have established the company Aygaz Doğal Gaz Toptan Satış A.Ş. on April 1, 2004 to engage in wholesale operations in the natural gas market and the company Aygaz Doğal Gaz İletim A.Ş. on April 2, 2004 to engage in liquefied natural gas (LNG) transmission activity. Both companies have the same shareholding structure.
